Press Release
Sunway To Open New Hospital and Mall in Ipoh by 2025
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah marked the ground-breaking ceremony to expand Jalan Tambun today, in the presence of Perak Menteri Besar YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad and Ipoh Mayor Dato’ Rumaizi bin Baharin, by announcing the Group’s plans to launch a tertiary medical centre and a shopping mall in the 1,350-acre integrated township of Sunway City Ipoh by 2025.
The expansion of Jalan Tambun is expected to ease traffic congestion and increase accessibility to the Eastern Development Corridor of Ipoh.
This RM16 million upgrading works is the latest in a series of collaborations jointly undertaken by Sunway and the Perak state government since the early 2000’s to spur the city’s economy.
As a committed and steadfast partner of the state government, Sunway had worked alongside the relevant state agencies to deliver, among others, the flyover on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Utara, the transformation of Jalan Tambun from a narrow two-lane single carriage-way to a wide four-lane lane road traversing Sunway City Ipoh, as well as the construction of slip roads linking the North-South Expressway to Jalan Tambun, of which Sunway is the sole contributor of funds from the private sector.
This latest initiative forms part of the Group’s RM2 billion investment in Sunway City Ipoh over the next few years that include Sunway Onsen Suites, a three-block residential suite, which is more than 90 percent sold for its first tower; Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh, a world-class hospital with an adjacent assisted-living complex, an education hub centred around a new university, and a shopping mall.
The RM350 million medical centre with 200 beds will open in 2024 and cater to the city’s growing population and serve the increased demand for tertiary medical care through a comprehensive cancer centre and a focus on women’s health and wellness lifestyle medicine.
Leveraging Sunway City Ipoh’s ecosystem as an integrated resort township which includes hospitality, theme park, education, commercial and residential components, Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh’s strategic location amidst tropical greenery and majestic 260-million-year-old limestone hills would also propel the city’s status as a medical tourism hub.
A shopping mall with a net lettable area of 700,000 square feet and 2,700 parking bays is also in the pipeline. This game-changing development is designed with two things in mind – blending in with Tambun’s natural setting while introducing the best retail experience into the heart of Perak.
The mall will further complement the existing developments in Sunway City Ipoh with a retail component that features international brands and F&B outlets to provide all the best food Ipoh has to offer, attracting locals and out-of-towners journeying along the North-South Expressway to visit for their retail and lifestyle pursuits.
The RM2 billion investment will benefit not just the local community and visitors to Sunway City Ipoh, but will also cater to the growing needs of the entire Eastern Development Corridor of Ipoh, serve as a major catalyst of growth in the city, and a substantial contributor to the state’s overall economic vibrancy.
Cheah says: “It has been said that Perak’s biggest export is neither pomelo nor white coffee, but human talent.
It is my hope that by providing a thriving ecosystem through an integrated township like Sunway City Ipoh, we can start reversing this trend and attract the best and brightest to make Ipoh their home.
Before the pandemic, up to two million motorists would traverse the North-South Expressway during festive periods.
We aim to attract travellers who use the highway to stop by Sunway City Ipoh and enjoy the amenities and facilities Sunway has to offer,” he added.
