Sunway Group Appoints Anuar Taib As Deputy President
Sunway Group has appointed Datuk Mohd Anuar Bin Taib as Deputy President, effective 2 Jan 2025.
Anuar served on the board of Sunway Berhad as an independent non-executive director since 7 July 2023, and is joining Sunway at a pivotal moment in the conglomerate’s history.
The Group marked its 50th anniversary in 2024 and saw the combined market capitalisation of its three publicly listed entities – Sunway Berhad, Sunway Construction Group Berhad and Sunway REIT – registering record highs.
In this newly created role reporting to Sunway Group President Tan Sri Chew Chee Kin, Anuar will oversee the group’s core businesses, including Sunway Property, Sunway Malls and Sunway Healthcare, among others.
Anuar said: “As a board member of Sunway over the past 18 months, I had the privilege of working up close with the extraordinary leaders that laid the foundation for the group’s remarkable growth and success.”
“I am humbled by the trust placed in me by Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah and my fellow board members to shape the next phase of Sunway’s journey for the next 50 years and beyond,” Anuar added.
Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO said: “Datuk Anuar is a highly respected corporate leader with deep experience on the boards of publicly listed companies and vast expertise spanning national, regional and global markets.”
“His appointment marks a significant milestone in Sunway’s evolution and reflects our commitment to prepare the Group for future challenges with a leader who embodies the vision and values of our diverse conglomerate,” Cheah added.
Anuar was most recently Group CEO at Sapura Energy Berhad, where he navigated through one of the largest corporate debt restructuring exercises in Malaysia, turning around the organisation’s strategic, operational and capability building performance as well as streamlining its global footprint.
Prior to that, Anuar served in various capacities at Shell across Malaysia, the US and the Asia-Pacific region, including as Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Malaysia, before joining PETRONAS as its Vice President of Development and Production.
Anuar holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in the US, and an MBA in International Management from RMIT University in Australia.
His appointment follows a series of changes to the senior management that will see Datin Paduka Sarena Cheah named Deputy Executive Chairman and Evan Cheah promoted to Deputy President.
This new organisational structure is intended to further strengthen Sunway’s ability to capitalise on growth opportunities in existing and emerging markets across the region.
As Deputy Executive Chairman, Sarena will grow and expand the Group’s international ventures, as well as identify and pursue new market opportunities. She will continue to oversee the ongoing development of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, Johor, into a world-class township that attracts global investments and promotes regional tourism.
In his role as Deputy President, Evan will lead Sunway’s strategic investments and emerging businesses, as well as focus on accelerating its digital transformation and position the Group at the forefront of innovation.
