• Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO wins UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award while Sunway Medical Centre wins UK-Malaysia Partnership Award.

• The Business Excellence Awards aims to recognise the best of British and Malaysian businesses.

Sunway Group emerged as the biggest winner at the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards 2019. Sunway Founder and Chairman and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Founding Trustee Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO was conferred the UK-Malaysia Business Personality Award for his outstanding contributions to bilateral trade and business between Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

Organised by the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC), the ceremony also saw Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) bag the outstanding UK-Malaysia Partnership Award for its contribution in research and clinical training opportunities following a partnership with the University of Cambridge, which has led to the setting up of a clinical research centre at Sunway Medical Centre, the first of its kind in the world – in Malaysia.

Held for the second year, the ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur and was graced by Finance Minister YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Dr Ong Kian Ming, British High Commissioner to Malaysia HE Charles Hay and BMCC chairman Andrew Sill.

SAID TAN SRI DR JEFFREY CHEAH, WHO RECEIVED THE ONLY INDIVIDUAL AWARD AT THE CEREMONY.

I wish to express my deepest gratitude to our friends and partners in the UK for helping us create a better tomorrow for our children,” he added.

The founder has successfully cemented partnerships between Sunway education and healthcare divisions with the UK’s top healthcare and educational institutions such as Universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Lancaster, as well as the Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s hospitals.

Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy is the only tuition provider for Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), and has obtained full accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) in the country.

Sunway Medical Centre was also honoured that evening, bagging the outstanding UK-Malaysia Partnership Award.

Sunway Medical Centre Chief Executive Officer Choy Wah Wei received UK-Malaysia Partnership Award from Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia Deputy Minister YB Dr Ong Kian Ming.

“It is truly an honour for us to win this award. We are very delighted that our deep partnership with leading institutions in the United Kingdom has not only enabled us to share knowledge, expertise and research, but also helped raise the standards of healthcare in the region,” said Sunway Group Healthcare Services Managing Director Lau Beng Long on the recognition.

SunMed first partnered with the University of Cambridge, to set up a regional clinical research site – first of its kind in the world – in Malaysia in 2017. Since then, the collaboration has enabled SunMed to work with the University of Cambridge’s Health Partners, the Royal Papworth and Addenbrooke’s hospitals.

SunMed also embarked on a partnership with University of Cambridge and the Royal College of Physicians, London (RCP), to establish a series of jointly collaborated Continuous Medical Education (CME) seminars featuring the world’s most renowned specialists and to cover latest trends and developments in acute and general medicine.

Established in 1963, the BMCC has been driven by the sole ordinance of advancing bilateral trade relations between the UK Malaysia.

Over the past five decades, the BMCC has been a catalyst in providing Malaysian-based businesses with networking and exposure, knowledge exchange and bilateral trading support services. Today, the BMCC has firmly rooted itself as one of Southeast Asia’s most prolific Chambers.
