Learning Beyond the Classroom

The constantly evolving job market poses new challenges to prospective employees, making it essential to acquire relevant skills and remain adaptable.

Our commitment to empowering individuals in their professional journeys has led to initiatives and programmes that provide opportunities to learn, advance, and apply practical skills.
Gen Z employees in today’s workforce place a high value on meaningful work, with 36 percent citing it as their top priority, and another 12 percent aspiring to make a positive impact through their careers.Gen Zs seek to contribute in ways that provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment, going beyond merely earning a paycheque. With shifting market demands in today’s fast-paced business environment, young jobseekers today face the challenge of acquiring relevant skills and finding work that brings meaningful change.
Recognising this, Sunway is committed to fostering an agile and adept generation of talents by cultivating and empowering our staff, students, and communities through dedicated programmes, initiatives and more.
Learning Hubs to Upskill and Enhance Capabilities
One of these programmes include Sunway University’s Career Readiness Programme (CRP), designed to provide future graduates with a foundation of essential soft skills that go beyond academic qualifications by addressing three main pillars – Exploration, Experience, and Employment.
The programme prepares students from pre-university to their graduate years through an array of workshops, informative talks and engaging focus groups. These sessions teach students the basics of job hunting – such as resume crafting, interview preparation and internship workshops – equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to embark on their career journeys.
What sets CRP apart is its strong collaboration with industry partners nationwide, bridging the gap between graduates and their prospective employers. An integral aspect of CRP is the cultivation of ‘Human-to-Human’ lifestyle skills, which equips students with soft skills to make a compelling first impression with potential employers.
Furthermore, Sunway’s Job Training Programme, developed in partnership with SMK Bandar Sunway and Generating Opportunities for the Learning Disabled (GOLD), provides pre-vocational and life skills to individuals with learning disabilities through a six-month training programme and apprenticeship. With a curriculum that is industry relevant and practical, students attend pre-vocational classes, working in areas such as food and beverages, housekeeping and sales across our business divisions.
Outside the traditional classroom model, we also tackle the issues of high unemployment rate among the youth, an ageing workforce as well as addressing food security through Sunway XFarms’ Agrifood Apprentice Programme.
After opening our first 42 Campus at Sunway FutureX in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur in 2020, we continue our mission to bring quality technology education to all Malaysians through 42 Malaysia. Through this nationwide initiative, we have opened campuses in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor, with a campus in Sarawak expected in the coming years.
42 Malaysia is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia to provide peer-to-peer learning with zero tuition fees, zero teachers and zero traditional classrooms, offering a revolutionary learning experience through project-based learning whereby students ideate solutions for real-world issues through coding.
Opportunities for Career Exploration and Skill Application
Beyond these educational opportunities, we also help our people upskill themselves through a range of engaging programmes.
The Sunway iLabs Young Innovators Bootcamp (YIB) and Sunway iLabs’ Make-It Challenge present opportunities for staff and students alike to apply their skills in a practical manner. These initiatives provide opportunities for productive collaboration with industry executives and thought leaders where individuals develop impactful ideas and generate transformative solutions to real-world problems.
Through these challenges, participants can pitch their proposals to a panel of judges, after which the winners receive support and funding towards the materialisation of their ideas.
On the other hand, The Sunway Agility Challenge encapsulates our goal of cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset among skilled talents as it offers undergraduates an opportunity to participate in a comprehensive hands-on case study challenge. Students rotate across six different Sunway business divisions gaining direct industry exposure and knowledge, as well as technical and soft skills under the guidance of industry mentors.
A Culture of Learning and Working with Sunway
Acknowledging the importance of providing a comprehensive support system to individuals starting their careers, we host various training programmes that present budding professionals with the opportunity to improve or acquire pertinent skills.
This includes the Sunway Management Associate Programme (MAP) which provides our young future leaders to gain holistic leadership development, promoting personal and professional growth during early careers. Associates within the programme progress through a structured development journey among our 13 business divisions and mentored by our senior management team.
To support continuous growth across different career stages for all our staff, we have established a multi-tier and systematic four-year talent development framework. This structured approach sees our people go through specialised training modules, strategic project assignments and cross functional mobility experiences, preparing them as they progress further in their careers and assume leadership roles within the organisation.
Besides that, Sunway also organises internal workshops aimed at further enhancing our people’s skills. These often include internal training across relevant fields such as digital and technological navigation courses; sustainability programmes such as Lunch & Learn sessions; as well as Safety, Health and Environment Week. These workshops are dedicated to promoting education and action towards creating a more sustainable workplace environment, as well as communicating the Group’s goals and how everyone can play a vital role in collectively achieving these targets as an organisation.
Over at Sunway University, we have also organised a series of speaker sessions called Campus with a Conscience, aimed at nurturing a holistic education and a planetary health mindset across the Sunway community.
A Commitment to Unlocking Potential
At Sunway, we are dedicated to nurturing a generation of adaptable, skilled individuals equipped to thrive in an ever-evolving work landscape. Through a multifaceted approach, we focus on enhancing skill development, fostering innovation, and driving productivity across the organisation.
By offering a variety of opportunities for career exploration and skill application, alongside a host of comprehensive training and mentorship programmes, Sunway ensures that our staff and students are well-prepared to meet the demands of the modern workforce and contribute to meaningful, impactful projects.
