• The bio-medical science centre is considered the centerpiece of the largest biotech cluster outside the United States.

Just six minutes south of University of Cambridge‘s main campus sits the newly named Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre with its modern exteriors and accentuated panel windows. The bio-medical science centre will contribute towards the advancement of bio medical knowledge and research in Malaysia and in the region.

The Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre (JCBC) is a recent addition to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the largest biotech cluster outside the United States. The six storey 18,000 square metre building is situated in a group of state-of-the-art laboratories and hospitals including the world famous Laboratory of Molecular Biology (16 Nobel Prizes), the Royal Papworth Hospital – the most illustrious Heart and Lung Hospital in Europe, and the renowned Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The building is now being occupied, and will be home to the Cambridge Medical Research Council Stem Cell Institute, the Cambridge Institute for Immuno-therapeutics and the Milner Institute of Therapeutics.

The last two laboratories have a district translational focus, and will hasten the transfer of fundamental research results to the clinic. Ultimately, the Centre will allow all Cambridge Stem Cell Institute groups to work together in a single location to create a fully-integrated, vibrant and cohesive stem cell community.

The Sunway-Cambridge partnership dates back to 2014 with the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Professional Fellowship Fund in Gonville and Caius, a famous medically-oriented College of the University of Cambridge. Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has also forged collaborative partnerships with Harvard University and the University of Oxford.

The building is among one of many collaborations between Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Cambridge, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors.

The collaborations between JCF and University of Cambridge include:

• The establishment, in perpetuity, for two Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellows at Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge.
• An agreement for Sunway University and Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) to establish a Clinical Research Centre that will serve as the regional site partner for the University of Cambridge. This will allow researchers from Malaysia and the UK to work together to tackle some of the world’s major health challenges. It will also help develop an integrated approach to healthcare, clinical trials and research in Malaysia for a range of diseases that are suited to the Asian genetic composition.
• SunMed to collaborate with the University of Cambridge’s health partners, the Royal Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, two of the world’s premier hospitals.
• Sunway University and SunMed also partnered with Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard universities to present the biennial Cambridge-Oxford-Sunway-Harvard Biomedical Symposium, an event that involves participation by the world’s leading experts in various medical fields.
• An agreement involving Sunway University and SunMed with the University of Cambridge and the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to deliver a series of continuing medical seminars in Malaysia under the name and supervision of the RCP.
